Following the catastrophic flash floods that hit the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday 26 August, hundreds of people have lost their lives and many more remain missing, with officials in both countries warning that the toll is expected to rise.
The floods were triggered by a glacial collapse high in the Himalayas, sending a surge of ice, rock and water down the valley. Scientists have said the region is warming roughly twice as fast as the global average, which has meant destabilised glaciers/mountain permafrost across the Himalayas and raising the risk of disasters just like this.
Homes have been destroyed, schools damaged and roads and bridges wrecked, while some areas remain cut off from communications. Right now, the immediate needs are shelter, food, clean water, healthcare and psychosocial support.
